You check with your doctor during pregnancy and are informed you are carrying two or three babies. Raising one child is tough; double trouble! You keep your eye on one and the other is out the door.  Luckily for North Shore moms, there is now an answer.

The North Shore Parents of Multiples (NSPOM) is a not-for-profit support group of parents of multiple-birth children serving the North Shore. They are a membership group that provides resources, education and support programs for its members along with “giving back” to the community such as NICU, the neonatal intensive care unit at Lions Gate Hospital and holiday programs.

NICU is an intensive care unit specializing in the care of ill or premature newborn infants. It’s a very necessary program because twins (or triplets) are frequently born prematurely and need medical attention. Of course, after the birth period twins require twice as much care as a single child. NSPOM provides monthly coffee meetings where parents get together and talk about the challenges of multiples and offer support to one another.

The group also maintains a library with information about the many problems parents face, provide guest speakers and maintain a website with relevant information. For instance, their Find Family Fun lists things for families to enjoy, from beaches to picnics to family friendly parks. They also offer Meals on Wheels for new moms, and Christmas hampers for those in need. NSPOM hosts many fun events throughout the year, at Easter, a summer BBQ, Halloween and Christmas, but it’s their semi-annual Swap Meets for which they are best known.

Each year the group hosts a popular “Kid’s Eco-Swap and Craft Market.” This year they have expanded the event by adding food trucks, handmade crafts, raffles and vendors that offer products parents and kids would love. The event will be taking place Saturday, October 15th from 9:30am – 1pm at Holy Trinity Elementary, 128 27th Street in North Vancouver.

Sponsors this year include NuTrend Signs & Printing, Healthy Family Expo, Modern Mama North Shore, Lonsdale Life and the North Shore News. Last year, as an addition to the Christmas Hamper Program the group was able to raise enough funds to get car seats and high chairs for those twins parents with limited resources. Plus they donated $1,300 to Lions Gate Hospital Foundation Equipment for NICU.

This is a great chance to pick up some gently used toys, clothing and gear for the babies and children in your life. Come out and check out the Craft Market and support a local crafter! Get free admission with your minimum online donation of $3 or purchase a ticket that will be donated to deserving parent through North Shore CapC Coalition. Tables are still available for vendors. As always, children admission is free. Get a head start on your holiday shopping!
